Cute and festive Halloween bento cakes, perfect for parties or school lunches. Easy to make and highly customizable.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or substitute)
  • Food coloring (orange, purple, green)
  • Edible eyes
  • Sprinkles (Halloween-themed)
  • Fondant decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour 6 small cake pans, or line them with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk until evenly mixed.
  3. Whisk together the vegetable oil, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract in another bowl.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing; a few lumps are okay.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Bake for 20–25 minutes. Cakes are done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Beat the softened butter until creamy for the frosting. Gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and beat until smooth. Divide and add food coloring as desired.
  8. Spread a layer of frosting between each layer of cooled cake. Stack and frost the outside of the assembled cake.
  9. Use festive toppings like edible eyes, sprinkles, or fondant decorations to decorate the cakes.
  10. Slice the bento cakes and serve. Enjoy!

Notes

Let the cakes cool completely before frosting to prevent melting. Experiment with flavors and decorations for unique designs.
